The 2018 fire season has changed everything. It has been confirmed that
PG&E equipment started the Camp Fire in November, killing at least 86 people, and destroying 14,000 homes. From now on, utilities have a choice. They can turn off the grid, or face potential criminal liability for future deaths.
As a result, PG&E announced plans to knock out power to as much as an eighth of the state’s population, for as long as five days, fifteen times a year, when dangerously high winds arise. By shutting off power during future Californian fire seasons, utilities hope to prevent more deadly wildfires.
“We’re all worried about it for the elderly. We’re worried about it because we could see people’s power shut off not for a day or two but potentially a week.”
- Governor Newsom
The City of Castiloga has already been affected. Hospitals rescheduled surgeries. All three schools closed. Hotel reservations were canceled. Citizens were left without basic community services for more than three days. Business owners and residents alike all felt the need for reliable backup power. As the fire seasons grow longer, this need will not be limited to one city, but to all of California. All businesses must consider the cost of power outages and the benefit of resiliency.
PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E are prepared to shut off the grid to prevent wildfires. California Public Utilities Code § 399.2 gives utilities the authority to shut off power in emergency situations when necessary to protect public safety, for as long and as often as needed. Customers with solar, without a battery, will still be affected.
A Microgrid protects you from power outages. Through combining reduction, generation, and storage, you can isolate yourself from blackouts. Unlike backup generators, Microgrids integrate into your daily operations and are used not just only when there is an emergency. Help us learn what your building needs.
Without batteries, solar panels generate energy when the utilities don't need it. Expensive Time-of-Use (TOU) is between four to nine in the evening - when the sun is not shining. Solar cannot cut expensive demand charges from commercial bills.
Thousands of Megawatts of Sustainable energy is being curtailed and wasted because the grid does not need it when it is being generated. The utilities need help storing the clean energy.
Microgrids link directly with State and Local energy demands. You will likely qualify for substantial utility rebates and incentives, including some of the following:
Self Generation Incentive Prgm.
Electric Prgm. Investment Charge
Investment Tax Credit

The utilities need our help
1. Utilities don't want customers to be without power during fire safety related shutoffs.
2. Utilities need help storing green energy at times that they can't use it.
3. Utilities need the ability to make energy at peak demands - when they really need it!
Through the DR Micorgrid Program, you may be eligible for a backup power, Microgrid system. This qualifies you for substantial utility incentives, and will cut your demand cost. To determine eligibility, submit information below.
